Real First Foods

Ruthie took this pic of Hannah, great angle!
When Ruthie as a baby, we ate  a "healthy" SAD (standard American diet): low fat, vegetable oils, boxed cereal and fresh fruits and veggies.  Ruthie's first food was baby rice cereal, soon to be followed by pureed spinach, various other veggies, fruits and the ever present O's.

As Asher approached the baby food stage, we had been transitioning to real food so knew that we didn't want to start with rice cereal.  Asher's first food was sweet potatoes.  Asher was a picky baby (I think it was a texture thing), so really only ate sweet potatoes, avocado, goat milk yogurt, applesauce, bananas and quinoa mixed with applesace.  We kept trying other fruits and veggies, but he would have none of it!

Now that we are about to start foods with Hannah, here is my list of things we are going to start with:
- sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin with coconut oil and real salt
- soft cooked egg yoke (not the white)
- goat milk yogurt
- avocado
- steamed, pureed veggies like carrots, spinach
- fruits like apples, bananas, pears
- coconut flour muffins
- meat, like chicken and beef
- chicken broth
- ???

I plan to keep her grain free until she is a year old.  I may add quinoa and wild rice around 10 months since they are actually seeds/grasses and not true grains. Will probably also add beans about this time.  Once her 12 month molars are in, I'll add rice, oatmeal and other gluten-free grains.  I'll also add citrus fruits around a year, will probably add berries  and melons before then (as we get them in the garden this summer).  I would like to keep her gluten-free until her two-year molars are in, but we will see how it goes.  I must remember:
Food for Fun until age One!

What do you use as baby's first foods?
